What is "Good Posture"?
Poor body positioning leads to bad posture over time, which can result in a number of chronic issues. Continually slumping on the couch or behind a computer, slouching in your chair, holding the phone in the crook of your neck and sleeping in odd ways can make your muscles and joints tight or even over stretched in a ‘habitual’ shape. There are two common postural problems that we frequently see clinically:
This postural problem is due to a muscular imbalance between the front and rear of the shoulder girdle & neck. It results in forward head carriage and rounded shoulders. This postural change in the upper body can result in many different symptoms, including neck pain, headaches, migraines, thoracic pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, shoulder pain, elbow pain etc.
This postural problem is due to muscular imbalance acting on the pelvis and lower back. This results in a ‘Sway back’ posture of increased lumbar and neck curve and abdomen prominence. This postural change in the lower body can result in many different symptoms, including low back pain, gluteal pain, mechanical hip pain, Sciatica etc
The practitioners at Gladesville Healthcare can successfully aid with postural rehabilitation through a combination of soft tissue massage, stretching, manual therapy and specific exercise prescription.
